WHEATON-based Greensward Applications, dedicated to safe, organic lawn fertilization AND PEST CONTROL methods, supported the City of Wheaton’s "Turn Wheaton Green" initiative recently by fertilizing Longfellow Elementary School’s grounds with 100% organic fertilizer.
The organic fertilizer, which is child and pet friendly, is the core of Greensward's organic fertilization program. Longfellow’s application in early November was the first in District 200 to receive such a treatment.
According to Michael Meyer, President of Greensward – which means “green turf” – his company is dedicated to supporting residential and commercial clients as well as educational and park facilities with organic fertilizer. Greensward is a division of Manchester Nursery, a third-generation landscape company in the western suburbs.
"The Longfellow application was our first affiliated with a school district but we've already had many others contact us with similar requests since we performed that job," said Meyer.
"It's such a natural decision to choose organic products to protect an area where children AND pets will be on a regular basis," he added. "And many times while traditional fertilizers will breakdown and dissolved into the soil, they still can end up in the water supply, so an organic approach really does make a difference, especially ON school and park playgrounds where children will be playing."
Longfellow Elementary School is one of 20 schools in Community Unit School District 200, based in Wheaton. Greensward applied organic fertilizer to Longfellow’s grassy areas on its three-acre campus.
One of the biggest reasons organic fertilizers are going to become even more popular are for the basics, Meyer said, that it protects the environment naturally and safely.
"I would say for the environment, for your children and for the future of your community it's important," Meyer said. "It's also a great way to protect the exterior of your home if you have pets and also for the wildlife that naturally roams the area."
"And most of all, I think it is environmentally the right thing to do. If people realized how many chemicals are used on the inside of the house as well as the outside, they would switch to organic in a minute.” By making environmentally friendly choices in your everyday life it would ultimately in the end lead to a healthier and greener world.
Greensward Applications provides organic and regular lawn fertilization, pest control shrub and tree protection and other landscaping services affiliated with exterior maintenance of your home. While many companies choose to offer "standard" multi-step programs, Greensward takes each customer on an individual basis.

Our goal is to inform customers on the organic process and the benefits to their lawn. Organic fertilizers take time to breakdown and add nutrients to the soil. As they breakdown, they feed the roots and allow them to produce carbohydrates, which is the energy source for the grass. For those who prefer traditional fertilizer, we still offer a regular fertilization program with slow release granular fertilizer.
